Private Lessons

What instruments are taught?

Violin and Viola (all levels), and Cello (beginner to intermediate).

What styles of music do you teach?

Classical and folk/ fiddle styles (including Irish, Old Time, and Appalachian). Technical and musical skills can be introduced and reinforced through any genre of music, and I encourage students to consider what they'd like to play. I've had students request to play some jazz, video game music, showtunes, film music, and rock.

Do you teach music reading?

I teach a combination of music reading, rote learning, and learning by ear. I believe that a quality music education should also include creative work like composition, improvisation, or arranging.

Where are lessons held?

Lessons are taught in my comfortable home studio in Bethel Park or virtually through Zoom for some students located outside of the Pittsburgh area. (Virtual lessons are usually not recommended for beginners or for very young children)

When are lessons held?

Depending upon a student's age and experience level different length and frequency of lessons are offered. Weekly lessons of at least one half hour are recommended. Lessons can be up to an hour in length, and can be offered once or twice per week.

What is the cost of lessons?

Cost will be determined depending upon the length and frequency of lessons. I believe that no motivated student should be turned away due to lack of funds. If you are worried about paying for lessons, please let me know and we can come up with something that works for you and your family. My rates are consistent with local standard rates.

Do you offer a free trial lesson?

Yes, the first lesson is a free trial to help both student and teacher evaluate if we are a good fit. Not every teacher is right for every student, and I want you to feel comfortable making the decision whether or not to enroll in lessons with me.

Can you prepare me for an audition or help me work on orchestra music?

Absolutely! We can work together to prepare you for any audition and select repertoire if necessary. If you are a member of an orchestra and would like to work on your parts we can spend as much time as you'd like on that. I want to use our lesson time to meet your specific needs.

Do you have any advice on getting an instrument?

Absolutely! Our goal is for you to have the instrument that is right for you. Getting the proper instrument and set up is the first step to success in your musical endeavors. I know that can be a daunting task if you don't know where to start, so I am happy to help with that process. If you are unsure of what instrument or size to get, or if you'd like to rent or purchase, please contact me for guidance. In the Pittsburgh area I recommend Resonance Violins and Brighton Music Center. Online, I suggest Shar Music. I do not advise ordering instruments from Amazon or the like. Many of these instruments are of inferior quality and are more like toys than musical instruments. Again, please feel free to contact me for advice and guidance.

Over the past 20 years, I have helped hundreds of musical learners achieve their goals! My teaching philosophy centers around nurturing the music-maker as much as well as the music being made. Our experience with music is not one-size-fits all. So, whether you are an experienced and confident player looking for a new perspective, or have never touched an instrument before, I can tailor our lessons to your needs, strengths, and goals.

Ashley is a great teacher! She has helped me strengthen my relationship with my instrument. My technical skills and confidence are much improved and I feel comfortable and capable expressing myself musically on my violin.

I am so happy we found Ashley to help my son continue on the viola. He was ready to quit because he was frustrated by learning note reading and Ashley helped him enjoy making music without notes. Once he trusted her, she started incorporating note reading and helped him find confidence and success. I'm so thankful for her patience and understanding of his particular needs.
